What Does a Postpartum Doula Do?

Chanel Blackmore, Black Pearl Doula Collective September 30, 2026

A postpartum doula supports a family in the weeks after birth with emotional support, newborn-care guidance, breastfeeding support and referrals, and practical help around the home. Postpartum doulas are not medical providers; they complement the care of physicians, midwives, and lactation professionals.

The postpartum period

The weeks after birth are intense: sleep is disrupted, bodies are healing, and new parents are learning to care for a newborn. Postpartum doulas step in with steady, practical support so families can rest, recover, and bond.

What a postpartum doula does

  • Emotional support and a listening ear
  • Newborn-care guidance: feeding, diapering, soothing, sleep basics
  • Breastfeeding support and referrals to lactation professionals
  • Light household help so parents can rest
  • Help recognizing when to call a licensed provider
  • Connection to community resources

Breastfeeding support and referrals

Postpartum doulas offer practical feeding support and encouragement. When clinical feeding issues arise, such as latch problems, pain, or weight concerns, the doula encourages the family to work with a licensed lactation professional or healthcare provider. Doula support does not replace clinical feeding care.

Emotional support and mental health

Postpartum mood changes are common, and serious conditions need professional care. Doulas provide compassionate emotional support and help families recognize signs that warrant a conversation with a physician or mental-health professional. Doulas do not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions.

How to find postpartum support

Ask about postpartum support when you book a consultation with Black Pearl. Postpartum doula care can be arranged before birth, so your support team is ready when you come home.
